New installer version 1.3

[2026-01-06]

New look & feel

Besides a new look & feel the installation environment has a lot of changes under the hood. A more intuitive and granular step wizard now immediately identifies where in the process you are. And the revamped dashboard now give you an improved status overview at a glance.

Security

The revised installer now features support for FTPS protocol in case your web server is setup for that. Still no user information is persisted on the n-gen.net master server: A soon as you close your browser the information is gone forever without a trace.

You can lock the installation environment with a single click and password protect access to the installer and by that any unauthorised access is prevented. The lock will also restrict access to the log viewer. Though no password is recorder in the installation log we recommend that you download the installation log and clear it after successful installation as it contains server name and web root path.

Comprehensive logging

The new installer has an extensive built-in logging function; it logs not only errors but also logs numerous successful actions. Furthermore, all fetched system files are verified already during the installation process and the results are written to the install.log file. The log file is located in the /install folder and is accessible as soon as the installation is initiated on your server.

View or download the installation log

When the installation process is initiated on you server the first step is to dynamically generate the Log Viewer (/install/viewInstallLog.aspx webform). It is a single file that allows you to immediately view the content of the install.log file. Baked in to the Log Viewer is a function for instant clearing of the log file if you need to perform a re-installation. Also the Log Viewer sports a download button that will save the install.log file to your client computer (recommended). The downloaded log file is named install_yyyy-MM-dd@HHmm.log so in case you have multiple install.log files you won't accidentally overwrite an existing log file.
When the installation environment is locked down the Log Viewer is also logged so only Admins with Owner privileges can access it. However, as the install.log file still resides in the /install folder we recommend that you either delete the log file or clear the log after successful installation.

Error handling

Critical installation steps on your server are now written into an installation log file: As the very first step of installation a log viewer is automatically created. During the entire process accomplished steps and any errors are logged. If something fails you can immediately see what is going wrong in the log viewer and you can - by a single click - download the log file for scrutiny or external support. Also a generally improved error handling gives you more precise and descriptive errors and suggestions for immediate remedy.

Though you can delete the installation folder completely when your n-gen.net CMS is installed we recommend that you lock it instead of deleting it. Why? Because the installation is also used for database maintenance and updates, i.e. installation of supplementary templates and page headers.

Is the installer an integrated part of the n-gen.net CMS Updater?
No, the installation environment is not maintained by the n-gen.net CMS System Updater. The installation environment is a one time creation; it's only created with the initial installation of of your n-gen. So if you want to update your existing install environment you need to start over. However, your existing connection information (web.config file) will be left untouched and your database information will also remain untouched until you decide otherwise.
